Are KPI's Killing Team Productivity?

Do you have an over reliance on KPI's to motivate your team?

Too often I see many businesses use KPI's as the primary focus of building a 'Performance Driven Culture'.

What many Leaders don't realise is that KPI's (Key Performance Indicators) primary focus is to provide us with information - NOT drive performance.

The Key word is INDICATORS. They provide us with an indication on how the team is performing and whether we're moving in the right direction. 

If we relate it to driving a car - INDICATORS which provide us with information on how we're travelling include the fuel and temperature gauge, the speedo and even street signs - these things don't drive the car to our destination, however they provide us with valuable information on how well we're travelling.

What starts and drives the car, is the person behind the wheel and their purpose for undertaking the trip.

As we drive the car, it's our purpose which motivates us to undertake the journey and get to us to our destination. Yes we keep one eye on the indicators to track how we're performing, however we DON'T give them our primary focus.

Unfortunately too many business leaders have it the wrong way around, and by placing too much focus on KPI's we're forcing our team to perform in a state of stress and anxiety - leading to burnout, poor performance and high staff turnover.
